What if my Baby doesn't sleep? (And other common Newborn Photography worries)
The honest, funny, and baby-led truth from your friendly in-home Newborn photographer in Warwickshire, Leicestershire & Birmingham.
⸻
So, you’ve booked a Newborn session (yay!)… and now the panic sets in:
•“What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
•“What if my toddler goes full gremlin mode?”
•“What if my living room looks like a nappy explosion?”
First of all — breathe.
You are not alone, and honestly? These are some of the most common questions I get as a Newborn photographer.
I photograph real families, in real homes — and I bring everything needed (including the calm). My sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and designed to go with the flow. Even when that flow involves a bit of chaos, a snack break, and a mystery stain on someone’s shoulder.
Let’s bust a few myths and worries, shall we?
⸻
“What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
Guess what? They might not. And that’s completely okay.
While those curly, sleepy newborn photos are lovely, awake babies are equally amazing. Wide eyes, curious expressions, flailing arms like a tiny conductor — all of it tells the story of your baby exactly as they are.
My sessions are baby-led, so there’s no pressure to pose or perform, If baby is awake? We go with it. If they fall asleep halfway through the shoot in a milk-drunk haze? Great. If they want to party the whole time? Bring it on, i’m relaxed about all of my sessions, that’s what 11 years of experience will do to you!
Basically — however your baby shows up, I work with it. And we always get beautiful images.
⸻
“My baby’s a bit colicky/unsettled — should we reschedule?”
Absolutely not. This is your reality — and I’m here for it.
I’ve photographed babies mid-scream, mid-poo, and mid-wind-sprint on the changing mat. I’ve been wee’d on more times than I can count (I now dodge like a ninja). Nothing surprises me anymore.
We take our time. Need to stop for a feed? Totally fine. Need 10 minutes for a cuddle or walk around the kitchen? Go for it. Your baby leads the way.
⸻
“My house is too small/messy/dark — will that ruin the photos?”
Not even a little bit. I don’t need big windows or pristine white walls to make magic.
I bring my own professional lighting setup, so natural light is not required. Whether we’re working in a cosy house in Birmingham or a kitchen with a toy explosion in Leicester, I’ll create soft, flattering light right where we need it.
We usually shoot in the living room or kitchen, depending on space — no need to tidy the whole house. (I’m a photographer, not a house inspector.)
⸻
“What if my toddler won’t behave?”
Spoiler alert: They won’t.
At least not the whole time. And that’s okay.
I love photographing siblings — even the wild ones. We get their photos done early, when they’re still curious (or bribable), and then let them take a break. I bring tricks, distractions, and zero pressure.
Whether they cuddle the baby or throw a toy at my head, we’ll capture something real — and that’s the goal.
⸻
“My baby has acne, flaky skin, or scratches — can we still shoot?”
Yes, yes, and yes. Most newborns have some kind of skin thing going on. It’s normal.
I gently retouch the temporary bits like baby acne, milk spots, or a scratch from an overenthusiastic fingernail — without making them look plastic or airbrushed. You’ll still recognise your baby — just with fewer blotches.
⸻
The Bottom Line?
You do not need:
•A sleeping baby
•A perfect house
•Angelic siblings
•Natural light
You just need you, your baby, and a willingness to embrace the chaos a little.
I bring the setup. I bring the light. I bring the calm. And yes, I’ve been known to rock a baby in one arm while fluffing a blanket with the other.
